(25.5.07)

SUFF are also honoured to announce the involvement of none other than Sydney's voices of underground culture - Jay Katz (Jaimie Leonarder) & Miss Death (Aspasia Leonarder). Mr. Katz and Miss Death are Sydney's most actively dedicated cult/rare film buffs, hosting the weekly FBi 94.5FM radio program 'The Naked City' (Sat. 10am-12pm),
and curating the eclectic weekly program of bizarre, trash, (and/or) classic cinema,
at the Mu-Meson Archives. Mr Katz and Miss Death will program an evening of underground film dedicated to SUFF, one week prior to the Festival.

We'll announce further details on this screening as they come to hand!

Sydney film lecturers announced as part of SUFF program
(20.5.07)
SUFF welcomes video artist and College of Fine Arts (UNSW) lecturer, JOHN GILLIES, into the 2007 program. John is one of Australia's most prolific and important practitioners in this field. Gillies is noted for his explorations with found footage and montage, and his integration of sound and performance practices within the medium of video. SUFF will be premiering one of John’s works at the festival entitled, “Postscript”. John's past works have included Hymn (1983), Techno/Dumb/Show (1991) and My Sister's Room (2000).

SUFF also welcomes filmmaker and Sydney College of the Arts (Sydney Uni) Lecturer, GEOFF WEARY, into the 2007 program. Weary's art practice is based in film, video and photography in the context of digital media production. His exhibitions have often included a mixed media approach with the inclusion of photographs, film and video elements and rediscovered objects. His interest in exploring themes related to the visible and the intangible have led to the production of a series of recent works digital video works that shift in focus between documentary and fictional and biographical elements. SUFF will also be premiering Geoff’s latest work at the 2007 festival.

Sneak peek at some non-competitive filmmaker highlights
(27.4.07)

To date, we have the honour of announcing the involvement of Bill Morrison, Craig Baldwin, Abigail Child and David Lynch as contributors to the Program. We are also delighted to welcome special guests and jury members, Arthur and Corinne Cantrill.
The Cantrills are figureheads of avant-garde cinema in You may have come across their beautiful and acclaimed publication 'Cantrill’s Filmnotes' (1971-2000) or may have had the rare pleasure of viewing one of their films, harking from their fifty year long career. In addition to making films, Arthur and Corinne write, educate and advocate for a more radical cinema.

Additionally, the 2007 Sydney Underground Film Festival will be joined this year
by some of the pioneering UBU Filmmakers including Albie Thoms and Paul Winkler.
If young experimental filmmakers today think they have it tough, try forming the first ever group in dedicated to making, exhibiting and distributing experimental films.
The group operated from 1965-1970, then became the Sydney Filmmaker's
Co-operative, producing some of Australia's most important experimental works and helping forge the careers of filmmakers such as Peter Weir, Phillip Noyce, and Bruce Beresford. The 2007 Sydney Underground Film Festival will also be premiering Paul Winkler's incredible new film, "Pop Kitsh" - and he still only uses in camera affects!
